Spurs Roll Past Shorthanded Suns 123-103 in Preseason Rematch

With Booker, Green, Bridges, Brooks, Gillespie and Ighodaro resting, Phoenix had little answer for a full-strength San Antonio group.

The Suns brought a roster with six holes in it to San Antonio on Wednesday night, and the Spurs beat them 123-103. Devin Booker, Jalen Green, Miles Bridges, Dillon Brooks, Collin Gillespie and Oso Ighodaro all sat out for rest. That is most of what Phoenix leans on when the games count, and a 20-point margin is about what you would expect from the gap.

The night had a different feel from the one before it. Phoenix won the first meeting 102-98 at home Saturday, with Luke Kennard scoring 20 and Green adding 18. The teams then flew to the Spurs' building for the rematch, and the Suns did not bring the same group. Coach Jordan Ott had said one of the two games would be the night off for his regulars, and that the plan was fluid. This was that night.

The starting lineups showed the mismatch before the opening tip. Phoenix went with Jamaree Bouyea, Kennard, Haywood Highsmith, Ryan Dunn and Khaman Maluach, a group built from the end of the rotation more than the front. San Antonio countered with its regular five: De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, Devin Vassell and Victor Wembanyama. It was the kind of matchup where the Spurs only had to run their usual stuff.

Wembanyama led all scorers with 19 points, and the Spurs pulled away in comfortable fashion. For Phoenix, it was the last road game of its preseason schedule, and the result will matter very little once the real games begin. The Suns will mostly be waiting to see their regulars on the floor together again.
