Pistons at Wizards Preseason Preview: Washington's Opening Win Meets Its Thin Availability

Washington's preseason opening win and home floor give it a slight edge over Detroit in a game where little is certain.

Both teams arrive at Capital One Arena 1-0 for Saturday's preseason meeting, and the Wizards have the clearer recent evidence to work with. They beat the Knicks 111-109 in New York, and the way they won points to what to watch against Detroit.

Washington started Dybantsa, Young and Davis in that opener. Davis led all scorers with 16 points, and Dybantsa piled up four steals. That kind of defensive activity can matter in a preseason game, where rotations are loose and turnovers often turn into easy points. If the Wizards keep pressuring the ball, they can make Detroit work for clean possessions even when the starters sit.

Availability is the biggest question. Vukcevic has a left hip impingement, Watkins is out with a torn ACL, Sarr is not yet a full participant and Middleton is ramping up. That makes it hard to expect a full-strength rotation, and Washington may lean on whoever is healthy and already in rhythm. The larger picture is also sobering: the Wizards have won only 50 games over the past three regular seasons, the fewest in the league. Ownership has shown patience with the rebuild and with coach Brian Keefe's young core, so this game is about development rather than pressure.

The sources say little about Detroit beyond its 1-0 record, so the edge comes from Washington's visible form, its starting group and the home floor. With the lineup uncertainty on both sides, expect a close, choppy game decided late. I'll take the Wizards to protect home court by a possession.

Prediction: Wizards 108, Pistons 105.
