Blazers Look to Lean on Depth in Preseason Test at Sacramento

Portland's frontcourt depth and ball-handling should matter in a preseason game where both teams have rotation questions.

Preseason games are about answers, and both sides arrive in Sacramento with questions. For Portland, the most important is how the Trail Blazers look in their first season under head coach Micah Nori. The roster is built around Deni Avdija and Ja Morant, with Donovan Clingan, Scoot Henderson and others around them. This game offers an early look at how Nori fits those pieces together.

The injury report will shape that picture. Shaedon Sharpe is out with a meniscus injury, which takes a young perimeter player out of the rotation. Damian Lillard and Williams III are questionable. If either sits, Portland will lean harder on Morant and Henderson to run the offense and on Avdija to create. The center spot looks steadier. Clingan and Williams are ahead of Yang Hansen, who is a third-string big and likely to play only if foul trouble or matchups call for him. That gives Portland a clear frontcourt hierarchy even if the guard rotation shifts.

Sacramento has more uncertainty at the position where Portland looks most settled. Domantas Sabonis and Monk are both questionable, and Raynaud is out. If Sabonis cannot go, the Kings lose their main interior piece and have fewer ways to match Clingan's size. Even if he plays, a preseason night often means limited minutes and experimental lineups.

That is why Portland gets the edge. Its absences are real, but its guard and wing group has enough creation, and its big-man rotation is better defined. Sacramento's lineup looks less certain at the most important spot. Expect a choppy, rotation-heavy game that Portland controls late with its more stable group.

Prediction: Trail Blazers 112, Kings 106.
