Sengun Hits 12 of 15 and Adds 10 Assists as Rockets Bury Celtics, 109-93

Alperen Sengun scored 26 on 12-of-15 shooting and handed out 10 assists, and Houston outscored Boston in each of the last three quarters to end the Celtics' five-game win streak.

Alperen Sengun missed three shots all night. He made 12 of his 15, scored 26 points, handed out 10 assists and pulled down seven rebounds in 38 minutes, the most of anyone on the floor. Houston beat Boston 109-93 at Toyota Center, and nearly everything good the Rockets did ran through their center.

The first quarter gave no hint of it. The teams traded baskets to a 29-29 tie, and the Celtics looked like a team that had earned its five-game win streak. Then Houston took the second quarter 28-21 and led 57-50 at the half. It was 82-73 after three, and the Rockets outscored Boston 27-20 in the fourth. There was no single burst to point to, just a lead that grew a little each quarter without Boston ever getting it back under control.

Jabari Smith Jr. gave Houston the other double-double, 14 points and 10 rebounds with 4-of-5 shooting from three. Amen Thompson added 14 and Tari Eason 13 off the bench. Kevin Durant scored 12 on 5-of-6 shooting, and Fred VanVleet had only 8 points but nine assists. Jayson Tatum led Boston with 19 points and nine assists, though he shot 5 of 16. Neemias Queta scored 16 on 6-of-7 shooting, and Luka Garza had 14 off the bench, four threes among them. Nobody on either side reached 20 except Sengun, who got there before the fourth quarter was long underway. Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser went a combined 0 for 10 from three. Derrick White made 3 of 12.

Boston, playing the night after its win in Orlando, fell to 5-2. All five of its wins in the streak had come against teams with losing records, and this was the first real test. The Celtics are 1-2 on the road. Houston, coming off a 119-98 rout of Oklahoma City, is 7-1 and 4-0 at home.
