Cleveland arrived in Atlanta with three straight wins and left with a 114-111 loss. The Cavaliers got 24 points from James Harden and 22 from Donovan Mitchell, but the run to four ended at State Farm Arena. Harden played 36 minutes, the most of anyone on the floor, and the margin was still three points.
The night was a back-to-back for both teams, and for Cleveland it was the first of the season. Neither side looked especially fresh, though the Hawks found more offense in the right places. Onyeka Okongwu was the biggest reason, with 29 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double. Nickeil Alexander-Walker added 25 and Aaron Wiggins gave the bench 20 in 24 minutes.
For Atlanta, the win came after a 2-0 start had turned into three consecutive losses, which left the Hawks under .500 and made last season's No. 6 seed look like a harder thing to repeat. They have been working through life after the Trae Young trade, and Jalen Johnson has been the one steadying them. He had 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists here, and CJ McCollum scored only five but handed out eight assists.
Evan Mobley had been the talking point in Cleveland after the Washington win, when he scored 24 points and hit 5 of 6 from three. Against Atlanta he finished with 11 points, four rebounds and seven assists. Sam Merrill scored 16 off the bench and Jarrett Allen had 14 and eight rebounds, but it wasn't quite enough. A model-based pick was making the rounds before tip, and the Cavaliers and Hawks played on without consulting it.
