Victor Wembanyama scored 52 points and took down 24 rebounds Wednesday night, and the Spurs needed every one of them to beat Dallas 112-111. San Antonio led by 17 at halftime and then spent the second half watching that cushion disappear. Wembanyama shot 16 of 28 and made just one of his eight three-pointers, so most of the damage came near the rim. The Mavericks finished a single point short.

San Antonio took control early, 32-26 after one and 68-51 at the half behind a 36-point second quarter. Then the scoring dried up. The Spurs managed 22 in each of the last two quarters, and Dallas answered with 29 and 31 to cut it to 90-80 after three. The Mavericks outscored San Antonio 60-44 over the second half and never quite got the lead.

Kyrie Irving led Dallas with 29 points, though it took him 27 shots to get there (9 of 27, 5 of 14 from deep). Naji Marshall added 22 off the bench on 9-of-12 shooting. P.J. Washington had 21 points and 10 rebounds. Dylan Harper gave San Antonio 21 on 9 of 15, and Stephon Castle had 17 points and 10 rebounds despite going 6 of 20.

Cooper Flagg also finished with a double-double, 19 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists in 40 minutes, but he went 7 of 19 and missed all three of his threes. The Spurs got just 10 from De'Aaron Fox and two from Devin Vassell, who missed all eight shots in 36 minutes. They still stretched their winning streak to six. Dallas, which lost to Sacramento on Monday, fell to 4-4.
