Pistons Hand 76ers First Loss, 106-93, in Matchup of Unbeatens

Cade Cunningham scored 26 and Detroit stayed perfect at 3-0 with a 106-93 win in Philadelphia, ending the 76ers' unbeaten start.

Somebody had to lose the zero, and on Sunday in Philadelphia it was the 76ers. Detroit won 106-93 and moved to 3-0. Philadelphia, which came in at 3-0 as well, dropped to 3-1 in an early look at two teams that expect to matter in the East. Cade Cunningham led the Pistons with 26 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists.

Detroit took control early, leading 34-22 after the first quarter and 56-44 at halftime. The Pistons outrebounded the 76ers 54-37, including 15 offensive rebounds, and made 14 threes to Philadelphia's 7. Duncan Robinson made 5 of 9 from deep on his way to 21 points. Daniss Jenkins had 18 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists in 38 minutes, and John Collins added 16 points and 11 rebounds, the only double-double on either team. Detroit opened with a 121-113 home win over Boston and beat Miami 128-111 on Friday.

Philadelphia played the second night of a back-to-back, its first of the season, and the 76ers did not look fresh enough to answer. Tyrese Maxey scored 29 points, and LeBron James added 18 points and 5 assists in 33 minutes. Jaylen Brown played a game-high 40 minutes and had 16 points on 5-of-20 shooting. Dean Wade, with 7 points on a long night, played 37 minutes. Adem Bona pulled down 13 rebounds off the bench, but the scoring that surrounded Maxey was too thin to keep up with Detroit's.

Both teams were missing a center. Jalen Duren sat for the Pistons with a right hamstring strain, and the club has given no timetable for his return. Paul Reed started and gave Detroit 8 points and 8 rebounds in 23 minutes. Joel Embiid had said he wanted to play but did not, and Philadelphia, short on size, had to make do without him. Detroit made do better.
