The Memphis Grizzlies beat the Chicago Bulls 104-100 on Friday night in a preseason game where the final score mattered less than who was on the floor and for how long. Both benches were deep into their rosters, and nearly everyone who dressed got minutes. Ty Jerome led Memphis with 16 points in 14 minutes, and GG Jackson added 14 off the bench.

The United Center crowd came mostly to see the rookie forwards. Caleb Wilson for the Bulls and Cameron Boozer for the Grizzlies were both Top 4 picks, and both started. Wilson got the better of the night, scoring 21 points in a team-high 32 minutes, though he finished with four rebounds and no assists. Boozer played only 12 minutes and had 10 points, four rebounds and three assists. Neither one decided the game, but Wilson's night was the more convincing audition.

Chicago had won its opener over Phoenix, 124-117, and that win left an easy impression. Wilson, Dailyn Swain and Matas Buzelis all stood out then. This game was a quieter test for the Bulls, and the defense is still what Tiago Splitter keeps bringing up in camp. Memphis reached 104 against a Chicago group that gave Leonard Miller 23 minutes. Miller had 12 points and 11 rebounds, the only double-double of the night. Tobe Awaka grabbed seven rebounds in 24 minutes, but he did not score.

The offense still looked like work in progress. Norman Powell scored 17 points in 19 minutes and Josh Giddey had 13. Swain handed out four assists, but Buzelis did not get a rebound or an assist in 12 minutes and scored six. The Bulls need to make faster reads when a drive gets cut off, and they got that chance here without having it settled. Four points was the gap, and Chicago will have more preseason games to fix it.
