Grizzlies Hold Off Jazz 110-105 to Reach 4-0 as Markkanen, Jackson Jr. Get Hurt

Memphis survived a Utah rally late in the fourth quarter on Ty Jerome's late baskets, while the Jazz lost Lauri Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr. to injuries in the first half.

The Memphis Grizzlies beat the Utah Jazz 110-105 on Monday night to move to 4-0, but the night may be remembered more for what it cost Utah. Lauri Markkanen left in the first quarter with a right wrist injury, and Jaren Jackson Jr. left early in the second with a knee injury. Neither returned. Markkanen played six minutes and Jackson 10.

Both teams were on the second night of a back-to-back. Utah had lost to the Lakers on Sunday afternoon, and Memphis had won in Sacramento on Sunday night. The Grizzlies took control early, going up 39-25 early in the second quarter, and still led 87-71 late in the third.

Utah came back anyway. Josh Green and Darryn Peterson hit threes, Mo Bamba scored twice inside, and Keyonte George's three-point play capped a 15-4 run that cut the lead to 102-101 with 3:37 left. George led all scorers with 26 points. Then Ty Jerome found his shot. Jerome, who had averaged 34.7 points through Memphis' first three games, made only one field goal through three quarters. He scored on a drive and then hit two jumpers in the final 5:16, the last of them a pull-up for a 106-101 lead with 2:15 left. Bailey and Mo Bamba answered to make it 106-105 with 1:01 to go, but Jaylen Wells made two free throws and Jerome added two more with 11.6 seconds left to finish it.

Cedric Coward led Memphis with 16 points and 11 rebounds and made all four of his threes. Jerome had 15 points and 8 assists, Wells scored 14, and Cameron Boozer and Jerami Grant each had 13. The Grizzlies made 16 threes to Utah's 10 and 20 of 22 free throws.

Bailey had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Utah, and Bamba scored 14 on 7-of-8 shooting with four blocks. The Jazz, now 1-3, were already thin up front, with Jaxson Hayes out with a sore right shoulder and Jusuf Nurkic still sidelined by a plantar plate tear in his right foot.
