Minnesota is going to be without Anthony Edwards for a long stretch, and LaMelo Ball spent Monday night showing what the Timberwolves plan to do about it. Ball scored 34 points on 12-of-21 shooting, hit 6 of 13 from three, and carried a 112-100 win over Milwaukee at home. The Wolves are 5-3, and the knee injury that will keep Edwards out for multiple months looks a little less ominous tonight.
Minnesota took the first quarter 29-18, and the Bucks spent the second getting it back. They won the period 29-19 and went into the half down 48-47. The third was a draw in spirit, with Minnesota ahead 32-29 for an 80-76 lead. In the fourth the Wolves put up another 32 against Milwaukee's 24, and the Bucks never got back to even. It was not a blowout, but the last 12 minutes were clearly Minnesota's.
Ball had help in the places that matter. Ayo Dosunmu played a team-high 37 minutes and finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists, a double-double that kept the offense organized. Rudy Gobert had his own, 10 points and 10 rebounds. Jaden McDaniels added 13, Trey Lyles 12 and Bones Hyland 10 in 14 minutes off the bench. Tyler Herro led Milwaukee with 21 points, including 4 of 11 from three, and Jaime Jaquez Jr. had 19 points and 8 rebounds. AJ Green and Myles Turner each scored 13.
The Bucks' trouble was the ball. They turned it over 17 times, and Minnesota turned those into 20 points, which wiped out the 19 second-chance points Milwaukee scraped together. Rookie Brayden Burries made his first NBA start after coach Taylor Jenkins reshuffled the lineup following losses to Houston and Cleveland. He had 9 points and 9 rebounds but shot 4 of 15. It was Milwaukee's third straight loss and left the Bucks 1-6, with their only win so far coming over Indiana.
