Wembanyama Carries Spurs Past Shorthanded Timberwolves, 121-111

Victor Wembanyama had 36 points and 14 rebounds with no turnovers as San Antonio won its fourth straight and sent Minnesota to a third consecutive loss.

Victor Wembanyama gave San Antonio the kind of night that makes a game plan feel optional. He finished with 36 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks, and he did it without a turnover. The Spurs beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 121-111 on Saturday, Halloween night, at home.

It was the Spurs' fourth win in a row. They opened the season with a pair of home losses and have since put together a run that looks less like a hot streak than a team settling in. They came in having outlasted Utah 117-111 in overtime on Wednesday, their first extra-session game of the year, on the second night of a back-to-back. This one asked less of them. San Antonio took the first quarter 34-28, gave some of it back when Minnesota won the second 33-26 and led by a point at the half, then pulled away with a 33-27 third. The Spurs are 4-2.

Minnesota fell to 4-3 and arrived already limping, having lost to Cleveland and Golden State in its previous two games. The Timberwolves were also without Anthony Edwards, who had arthroscopic surgery on his knee Thursday and is expected to be out about two months. With him gone, Jonathan Kuminga becomes the player the offense runs through, and the Wolves held up for a half before the Spurs' third quarter took the game away.

The margin was 10 at the end, and the Timberwolves never got it back to a possession after the break. The Spurs have a lot of games ahead before anyone can say what this run means. For one night, the 7-foot-4 centerpiece made it look simple.
