Magic hold off Grizzlies 122-118 after a fast start in Memphis

Orlando built a first-quarter cushion and secured a late putback to beat Memphis in preseason play, with Zach Edey's debut a brief one.

Nobody in the building was treating this like a measuring stick. It was a preseason night, with both coaches working through deep benches and starters on short leashes. Tristan da Silva played the most minutes of anyone, 25, and finished with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists for Orlando. Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner and Desmond Bane were each out of the game by the midpoint of the evening.

The Magic made the trip to Memphis worthwhile, beating the Grizzlies 122-118 on Wednesday. It was tight at the end, and it was decided with 13.9 seconds left, when Orlando got an offensive rebound and converted the putback. Memphis, which had pushed back all night, never got the shot it needed to answer.

The early minutes cost the Grizzlies. Orlando took the first quarter 36-26 and spent the rest of the night holding some version of that cushion. Memphis won the second quarter 35-28 and the fourth 31-28, but the Magic took the third 30-26, and the rallies only ever got the Grizzlies within range.

Zach Edey made his preseason debut and started at center, but it was a short shift: 10 minutes, 2 points, 4 rebounds. Ty Jerome did the scoring that mattered most for Memphis, with 17 points and four assists in 19 minutes. Cameron Boozer added 16, and GG Jackson had 15 off the bench in 14 minutes. Jamal Cain gave Orlando 15 behind da Silva, and Wendell Carter Jr. had 13 in 15 minutes.
