Raptors Answer Minnesota Loss With a 129-99 Rout of Magic

Scottie Barnes shook off a scoreless night with 28 points as Toronto bounced back from its first loss and ran away from a depleted Orlando team.

Toronto had a loss to clear out, and it did so quickly. After opening 2-0, the Raptors were beaten 117-94 by Minnesota, and the offense was the part that bothered people. Wednesday night at home they put up 129 on Orlando and won by 30, which is about as clean a reset as a team gets this early in the year.

Scottie Barnes did the most to make it feel that way. With Kawhi Leonard out, Barnes is the one running the offense, and he arrived having missed all 12 of his shots against the Timberwolves, five of them from three. This time he scored 28 on 31 minutes, with six rebounds and four assists. RJ Barrett added 25 points, nine rebounds and six assists, and Immanuel Quickley had 16 points and seven assists. Jamal Shead came off the bench for 13 points and seven assists, and Trayce Jackson-Davis grabbed 11 rebounds in 20 minutes.

Orlando was short-handed from the start. Paolo Banchero's ankle was the biggest worry on the Magic's injury list, and he did not play, which left the half-court offense without its main option. Tristan da Silva led the Magic with 20 points. Franz Wagner and Desmond Bane each played 34 minutes, scoring 15 and 13. Wendell Carter Jr. pulled down 10 rebounds but scored only three. Toronto's reserves outplayed Orlando's rotation for most of the night.

Leonard will be reevaluated in a week as he works through treatment and rehab for swelling in his left knee, so the Raptors need other players to step up. Ja'Kobe Walter started and scored 14, and Collin Murray-Boyles had 10 in 15 minutes. Toronto still has a long-running problem from deep, ranking 29th in three-point percentage at 26.2% coming in, but it did not stop them here. The Magic had beaten the Knicks on Sunday for their first win of the season and wanted to build on it. They never got close to doing so.
