Magic Answer Blowout With a Seven-Point Win in Toronto, Banchero and Suggs Out

Orlando played without Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs and still beat the Raptors 121-114 at Scotiabank Arena, as Franz Wagner and Anthony Black each posted double-doubles.

The Magic did this without Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs, which is not how anyone would have drawn it up. Orlando beat the Toronto Raptors 121-114 at Scotiabank Arena on Friday with Desmond Bane scoring 28 and Franz Wagner adding 26 points and 11 assists. Wendell Carter Jr. had 20 points and seven rebounds. Anthony Black ran the guard minutes in Suggs' absence and finished with 17 points, six rebounds and 10 assists, a double-double of his own. Jamal Cain gave them 13 points in 15 minutes off the bench.

The backdrop was the first meeting, a 129-99 Toronto win that was ugly from the opening minutes. Tristan da Silva said afterward that turnovers were the main problem, and a team that short on ball handlers could not afford a repeat. Wagner and Black combined for 21 assists here, and the Magic spent the night scoring in the half court. They did not hand Toronto easy points the way they had two nights earlier.

Toronto had its own reasons to feel good about the night, mostly because of Scottie Barnes. He played 39 minutes and scored 41 with five rebounds and five assists, and he still came out on the losing side. Jakob Poeltl had 12 points and 11 rebounds, a double-double in 23 minutes. Immanuel Quickley added 17 points and eight assists. The Raptors leaned on the same physical, grabbing defense that had rattled Orlando in the first game. The Magic took the contact this time and kept getting to their spots.

The oddsmakers had Toronto as a 5.5-point home favorite, so Orlando beat the number and the game also went well over the total of roughly 226. The Magic got the quick rematch at Scotiabank Arena, the second game there in three nights, and used it to cancel out the earlier loss. Jase Richardson started and scored only four points in 33 minutes, but he grabbed six rebounds, and this was a night when the starters and Cain carried the scoring.
