Warriors Hang 42 on Suns in the Third Quarter, Erase a Halftime Deficit and Survive 116-113

Golden State trailed by six at the half, then outscored Phoenix 42-36 in a third quarter that tied the game at 93. Stephen Curry's 34 points were enough to hold off the Suns by three.

Golden State scored 42 points in the third quarter Monday night, turning a six-point halftime deficit into a 93-93 tie, and then held on for a 116-113 win over Phoenix. The Warriors had scored 19 in the first quarter and 32 in the second. They found another 42 after the break, and the Suns never got far enough ahead again.

Phoenix had the better start, taking the first quarter 31-19 and leading by 12 at one point on the scoreboard. The Warriors cut that to 57-51 by halftime, then outscored the Suns 42-36 in the third. Stephen Curry led all scorers with 34 points on 9-of-21 shooting, including 5 of 13 from three, with six rebounds and seven assists in 33 minutes. Brandin Podziemski added 20 points, and Charles Bassey scored 19 on 7-of-10 shooting off the bench, with eight rebounds in 23 minutes.

The fourth quarter was tight. Golden State won it 23-20, which was just enough. Devin Booker scored 26 points for Phoenix on 8-of-18 shooting, with five assists, and Miles Bridges had 21 on 7-of-14. Dillon Brooks added 18 points and eight rebounds, and Oso Ighodaro, back in the lineup, made all six of his shots for 14 points. Jalen Green played a game-high 36 minutes and finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, but he shot 5 of 14 and missed all four of his threes.

The Warriors, who started 0-3, are 5-3 and have won five straight. Phoenix is 1-4, and its only win came on Oct. 24 against a Warriors team without Curry. Yaxel Lendeborg followed his 36-point game with 16 points on 3-of-10 shooting, plus five rebounds and five assists. Draymond Green was back and played 17 minutes, scoring four points with four rebounds. The Suns shot well enough to stay in front for the first half and could not hold the lead once the third quarter turned.
