Pregame AnalysisHawks Look to Fix Their Sharpness Against a Thin, Road-Weary Nets Team
Atlanta has the edge at home, but Brooklyn's first win gives it some life.
This page is the pregame analysis. The box score is the main page for the game, and the matchup history collects every meeting between these teams.
Brooklyn arrives in Atlanta with a little momentum, though not much else in its favor. The Nets snapped their losing start with a 98-90 win over Indiana, with Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr. each scoring more than 20. That performance is the clearest blueprint for how Brooklyn can stay in this one: its two top scorers have to carry the offense again, because the supporting group is thin. Egor Demin is out with a bone bruise, which removes a guard from a rotation that is already stretched.
The schedule adds another burden. The Nets are in the middle of six road games in seven, including a back-to-back, and fatigue is a real concern against a home team that can push the pace and win possessions late. Frontcourt health matters too. Noah Clowney is questionable with a knee issue, and if he cannot play, Brooklyn will have fewer options to protect the rim and finish defensive possessions with rebounds.
Atlanta is not without concerns. The Hawks needed a late Onyeka Okongwu basket to hold off an Indiana team down to six players, 108-104, after blowing most of a 15-point second-half lead. Quin Snyder liked the result, but the sharpness question is fair. Jalen Johnson is questionable with an ankle injury, and he leads the team in rebounds (9.0) and assists (7.9). Asa Newell and Jock Landale are both out, so Atlanta's frontcourt depth is thin as well.
Even so, home court and Brooklyn's travel burden should matter. If Johnson plays, Atlanta's playmaking and rebounding get a major lift. If he sits, the Hawks should still have enough balance to absorb a Randle and Porter push, as long as they avoid another late lapse. I expect a competitive game that Atlanta controls down the stretch.
Prediction: Hawks 110, Nets 102.
