Pregame AnalysisNets Lean on Frontcourt Scoring, but Cleveland's Home Opener Looks Tough to Solve
Brooklyn's defensive questions and thin guard minutes point toward a Cavaliers win in Cleveland.

Brooklyn arrives in Cleveland at 0-1, with the Cavaliers set to begin their season on Saturday night in their first game on DAZN. The Nets' projected starting group of Egor Demin, Keon Ellis, Michael Porter Jr., Julius Randle and Day'Ron Sharpe should carry most of the early-season scoring load. Porter had 27 in the preseason finale, and Randle gives Brooklyn a physical presence to pair with Sharpe inside. The Nets will have offensive punch.
The concern is the other end. Brooklyn lost 144-128 to Miami in its final preseason game, and the Heat shot 58.5%. A team can score 128 and still lose when it cannot get stops, and Cleveland has the type of lineup that can punish that. The Cavaliers also have veteran guard James Harden, who can create looks against a defense that has had trouble holding its shape.
Brooklyn's guard depth is another issue. Mikel Brown Jr. is back from an ankle injury after scoring 15 points in his preseason debut, but Fernández said he will begin the season on a minutes restriction. That limits how much ball-handling and shot creation the Nets can bring off the bench. The status of Bilodeau, Diop and Tomlin, all listed with an expected Oct. 24 return, could also change rotations on the night.
The Nets should be able to trade baskets for stretches, especially with Porter and Randle involved. Over 48 minutes, though, Cleveland's home setting, Harden's playmaking and Brooklyn's defensive questions should make the difference. I expect the Cavaliers to pull away late for a comfortable but not lopsided win.
Prediction: Cavaliers 119, Nets 109.
