Depleted Hornets Face a Hot Pistons Team in Detroit

Charlotte's injury list and Detroit's perfect start point toward a home win.

Charlotte has managed a 3-1 start, including a 115-110 win over Miami on Oct. 24, but the roster that produced it is being stretched. Coby White (calf), Grant Williams (hamstring) and Kylan Boswell (knee) are listed out, and Kon Knueppel is listed out with a hamstring issue after missing the Oct. 26 game. That removes starting-lineup talent and the depth the Hornets need to survive a road game against an unbeaten team.

The load shifts onto Naz Reid, who has been central to Charlotte's early success. He is averaging 20 points, 8.7 rebounds and three assists while shooting 46.2% from three. The Hornets are also a very different team after the trade that sent LaMelo Ball out and brought Reid in, so their fast start is hard to judge against past seasons. Reid's illness listing adds another question. If he is limited, Charlotte has few alternatives for shot creation and floor spacing.

Detroit comes in 3-0 and climbed into the top three of the latest power rankings, a jump of eight spots. The Pistons have their own concerns: Ausar Thompson is listed questionable with an ankle issue, and Jalen Duren has a hamstring designation. Missing either one would affect Detroit's perimeter defense and rotation, and that is the main way Charlotte stays close. Even so, the Pistons' depth should hold up better than the Hornets' does.

Expect Charlotte to compete, with Reid keeping the offense afloat for stretches. But a short bench against a motivated, unbeaten home team is a difficult assignment. Detroit should pull away in the second half.

Prediction: Pistons 112, Hornets 103.
