Cavaliers Face a Reshaped 76ers Roster in Philadelphia

Cleveland steps into a tough road test against a new-look Philadelphia group that is already 1-0.

The Cavaliers arrive in Philadelphia facing a team that looks very different from the one they might have scouted a year ago. The 76ers added LeBron James and Quentin Grant-level headline help in the form of Brown, and the early returns were encouraging: a 106-100 road win at the Knicks on a night built around New York's banner celebration. For Cleveland, the first challenge is simply preparing for a roster whose rotations and tendencies are still being defined.

James' debut was notable for its balance rather than volume. He finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists, a line that suggests he was comfortable setting up teammates rather than forcing the offense. That matters because Tyrese Maxey remained the lead scorer, pouring in 28 points to pace everyone on the floor. Cleveland's defenders will have to decide whether to load up on Maxey's speed and shot-making or stay home against the playmakers around him, and Philadelphia showed it can punish either choice.

The ball movement is the more worrying sign for the Cavaliers. All four of Philadelphia's stars had at least five assists, which points to an offense that does not depend on one player dominating possessions. Add the bench shooting, with Simons hitting three 3-pointers and Caldwell-Pope two, and Cleveland cannot simply concentrate its attention on the headliners without paying for it on the perimeter.

Cleveland should compete, but Philadelphia has the more proven look through one game, plus home court and a lineup that already showed it can win away from home. I expect a close game that the 76ers control late through shot creation and bench spacing. Prediction: 76ers 108, Cavaliers 103.
