Nuggets Look to Lean on Jokić as Suns Search for Answers in the Desert

Denver's depth is stretched, but Phoenix's thin frontcourt and early struggles tilt the matchup toward Nikola Jokić.

Denver arrives in Phoenix with a roster that is not at full strength. Cameron Johnson, Alpha Diallo, Spencer Jones and Julian Strawther were listed as out or doubtful in the pregame sources, which leaves the Nuggets thin at forward and on the wing. That could limit their rotation options and force some unfamiliar combinations onto the floor. The recent schedule has already tested them, too, including a home opener against New Orleans that came in the early days of the 2026-27 season.

Even so, the Nuggets still have the most important piece in this matchup: Nikola Jokić. Phoenix is counting on rookie Khaman Maluach as its starting big because Mark Williams and Oso Ighodaro are out. That is a demanding assignment against the league's most versatile center, and the Suns have little cover behind him. If Jokić draws help, Denver's remaining shooters and cutters should get cleaner looks. If Phoenix stays at home, he can pick the defense apart himself.

The Suns have their own problems. They are 1-2, and coach Jordan Ott has issues to fix, including rebounding and possession control. Their lone win was a 131-122 victory over a short-handed Golden State team, so it offers limited proof of how they will handle a top-tier opponent. Devin Booker has been serving as the primary point guard, and Phoenix still needs to find a way for Jalen Green to help him more effectively, as the Suns were outscored when Green played.

Phoenix should have enough scoring from its backcourt to stay close, and Denver's injuries leave the door open. But the Suns' frontcourt shortage and trouble on the glass are hard to hide against Jokić. Expect a competitive game that Denver controls late.

Prediction: Nuggets 119, Suns 113.
