Pistons' Defense Meets a Short-Handed Hornets Rotation in Charlotte

Detroit's interior-focused defense looks like a tough test for a Charlotte team still missing key perimeter players.

Charlotte has played the season so far without Coby White, Kon Knueppel and Grant Williams, who are all listed out with calf and hamstring injuries. That leaves the Hornets thin on perimeter depth and scoring, and it shapes how this game should go. The projected starting group of Schröder, James, Miller, Reid and Diabaté shows who has to carry the load, and there is little room for an off night from any of them.

The Hornets are 3-3 and tied for sixth in the East, but the recent form is uneven. They lost at Washington on Oct. 30, and the sources disagree on what came before that. Even so, a team missing this much scoring has trouble recovering when its starters struggle. One bright spot is that Knueppel appears close to returning. Coach Charles Lee said he completed a workout with the Greensboro Swarm and responded well. The timing is still uncertain, though, so Charlotte can't plan around him.

Detroit's identity fits this matchup well. The Pistons have built their season on tough defense and efficient scoring in the paint, and they have won even when their three-point shooting was poor. That shooting is their clear weakness, and one report expects them to look for a shooter before the trade deadline. Against a Charlotte group lacking creators, though, Detroit can lean on its defense and interior pressure and live with some missed threes.

I expect a grind where Detroit's defense and paint scoring slowly create separation. Charlotte will have stretches where its starters keep it close, but the lack of depth should show in the second half. The Pistons take it by a possession or two more than the Hornets can answer.

Prediction: Pistons 107, Hornets 100.
