Thin Warriors Frontcourt Faces a Tough Road Test in Phoenix

Golden State's injuries and unsettled center spot give Phoenix the edge at home.

The Warriors arrive in Phoenix with the biggest questions in their frontcourt. Kristaps Porzingis is not with the team, reports say he may retire or be traded, and Golden State is already looking at moving his contract. That leaves the center spot without its expected anchor. Charles Bassey, who had been in line to start there, was listed out with knee tendinitis, which pushes minutes toward Graham Ike. If Bassey is still sidelined, Golden State will be leaning on an unproven big for a road game.

The perimeter is also short-handed. Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody are out long-term with knee injuries. Butler is likely back in the second half of the season, and Moody has no set timetable. Brandin Podziemski missed the opener with bilateral low back soreness, and his status for this game is unconfirmed. De'Anthony Melton looks like the obvious replacement in the starting five, though the sources disagree on whether he starts or comes off the bench. Either way, the Warriors have little spare wing depth to absorb foul trouble or a cold shooting stretch.

The projected frontcourt of rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, Gui Santos and Draymond Green gives Golden State some versatility and Green's organizing presence. It also asks a rookie to handle a road environment while the rotation around him is still being sorted out. Phoenix doesn't need anything exotic here. If the Suns keep the game orderly and test Golden State's thin big-man minutes, the depth gap should show up late.

Expect the Warriors to stay competitive through three quarters on Green's playmaking and structure. But the missing pieces up front and on the wing should catch up with them down the stretch. Suns 111, Warriors 105.
