Short-Handed Hornets Face a Healthier Heat in Charlotte

Miami's near-full roster should outlast a thin Charlotte backcourt.

Charlotte hosts Miami with the kind of injury sheet that shapes a game before it starts. The sources most often point to a thinned Hornets rotation, with Kylan Boswell (knee), Kon Knueppel (hamstring), Coby White (calf) and Grant Williams (hamstring) all listed out for the opener. Those lists may not match this game exactly, but the pattern is clear: Charlotte's guard and wing depth is stretched, and that matters against a Miami team that appears close to full strength.

The Hornets also arrive without much rhythm. They finished a preseason hampered by injuries at 1-3, according to most sources, so several players have had little time together. The expected group of Dennis Schroder, Grayson Allen, Brandon Miller, Naz Reid and Moussa Diabate is workable on paper, but it is still a patched-together unit. Allen stepping into Knueppel's spot shows how much Charlotte is improvising. This is also a retooled roster after the summer trades of LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges, so chemistry is not guaranteed.

The offense will probably run through Miller. With Knueppel out, he should absorb a heavy workload, and he can keep Charlotte competitive if he scores efficiently and creates for others. The risk is that Miami can focus its attention on him, because the supporting options are thinner than usual. If Schroder and Reid cannot take enough pressure off him, possessions could get difficult late in the shot clock.

Miami's edge is stability. A mostly healthy Heat group should have clearer roles and fewer lineup holes, and that should count over four quarters. Charlotte has enough at home to keep this within reach, but I expect Miami's depth and cohesion to settle it late.

Prediction: Heat 109, Hornets 103.
