Pregame AnalysisHeat Look to Cash In on Clippers' Turnover Troubles
Miami's rising stars meet a depleted Clippers team that cannot stop giving the ball away.

The most glaring number in this matchup belongs to Los Angeles. The Clippers lead the league with 23.5 turnovers per game and became the first team since 2002 to commit at least 24 in three straight games. That is a problem against any opponent, but it is especially risky against a Miami team that just scored 145 points in a rout of Indiana. Every live-ball giveaway hands the Heat a chance to get Giannis Antetokounmpo moving downhill.
Miami has also found its footing. After an 0-4 start, the Heat have won two in a row and sit at 2-4. Antetokounmpo, averaging 28.2 points, posted 31 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists against the Pacers. Bam Adebayo added 27, his best game of the season after a slow start. If both stars keep playing at that level, the Clippers will have trouble matching Miami's size and playmaking.
Los Angeles arrives in rough shape. The Clippers have lost four straight since beating Sacramento on opening night, rank 13th in the West, and have played four of their last five on the road. Brandon Ingram, Bradley Beal, Max Strus and Jordan Miller are out, which has forced rookie Keaton Wagler into heavy minutes. That is a lot to ask of a young player against a defense that will try to speed him up.
Miami is not flawless. Its shooting is limited, its defense has been inconsistent, and its role players have given little. If the Clippers protect the ball, those flaws could keep this close. That is a big if given their recent form. I expect Miami's stars and the extra possessions to decide it.
Prediction: Heat 118, Clippers 107.
