Depleted Thunder Face a Tough Road Test in Cleveland

Oklahoma City's strong 4-1 start meets a banged-up roster in Cleveland.

Oklahoma City arrives in Cleveland at 4-1, but the group that built that record looks very different on the injury report. Chet Holmgren is out with right knee patellar tendinitis and is expected to miss about 8-10 weeks. That takes away the Thunder's rim protector and a big chunk of their frontcourt depth. Thomas Sorber, another center, is out after right knee surgery, so there is little cover behind Holmgren's absence.

The perimeter is thinner still. Jalen Williams is out after ankle surgery and is likely done for the season, which removes a key scorer and playmaker. Cason Wallace is out with a left shoulder labral tear after surgery, Alex Caruso is out with a right ankle sprain and no return timeline, and Nikola Topić is out after low back surgery. That is a lot of guard depth gone at once. Oklahoma City will have to find shot creation and ball handling from whoever is left, and Cleveland can pressure that group for a full 48 minutes.

The Thunder's recent game is a warning. Their only loss so far was a 120-96 defeat at Dallas on Wednesday, where they faded late. A short rotation on the road, with little rim protection behind the first line of defense, is a recipe for that kind of fade. Cleveland does not need a perfect night. It needs to attack the paint, keep the pace steady and let fatigue work on a Thunder team asked to cover too many roles.

Oklahoma City's start suggests it can stay competitive for a stretch. But the absences up front and in the backcourt should tell in the second half. I expect Cleveland to pull away late and win comfortably.

Prediction: Cavaliers 117, Thunder 106.
