Pregame AnalysisPreseason Preview: Magic and Cavaliers Open a Two-Game Set in Cleveland With Lineups in Flux
Cleveland's longer injury list is offset by continuity, which gives the Cavaliers a slight edge in this preseason opener of a two-game set.

Preseason games rarely hinge on schemes, but this one carries real questions about who will be on the floor. Cleveland lists James Harden, Diop and Tomlin as questionable, and Peyton Watson is day-to-day with a hamstring strain. That is a lot of uncertainty for a team that wants to use these exhibitions to test lineup combinations. With Mitchell, Harden, Mobley and Allen back as the core, the Cavaliers have a stable foundation. If Harden sits, the experimenting will probably happen around Mitchell, Mobley and Allen, and that could make the rotations choppy.
Orlando has its own availability issues. Jonathan Isaac (knee), Jalen Suggs (illness) and Anthony Black (ankle) are all listed as questionable. If all three sit, the Magic lose defensive versatility and playmaking at the same time. That matters because the most interesting thing about Orlando is its offense under Sean Sweeney. The Magic opened the preseason with a Spain pick-and-roll that produced an open corner three for Carter, and they came back to the set with counters. That kind of structure can travel even when the rotation is thin, since it gives role players clear reads.
The schedule adds another wrinkle. These teams meet again Oct. 13 in Orlando, and Cleveland has already played its Oct. 8 preseason opener against Boston. Coaches may use this first meeting to gather information and save adjustments for the rematch, which usually makes for loose, rotation-heavy basketball.
I give Cleveland a narrow edge. The Cavaliers have the more established core and the home floor, and Orlando's new system is still being installed. Expect a bumpy game that Cleveland controls late.
Prediction: Cavaliers 108, Magic 104.
