Pregame AnalysisWarriors' Curry-Led Surge Meets a Shorthanded, Struggling Magic Team
Golden State's hot streak and Orlando's thin roster point toward a Warriors win.
This page is the pregame analysis. The box score is the main page for the game, and the matchup history collects every meeting between these teams.
Stephen Curry arrives in the form of an MVP candidate. He scored 34 points against Phoenix, 18 of them in the third quarter, as Golden State erased a 17-point deficit for its fifth straight win and a 5-3 record. That kind of third-quarter burst is a problem for an Orlando team that needs stability right now.
The Magic are 2-5 with a new head coach, and their offense ranks 29th at 105.7 points per game. They also turn the ball over 17.3 times a night. Those turnovers could feed Golden State's transition chances, especially with Curry the focus of the defense. Orlando's roster makes the task harder. Paolo Banchero (ankle), Jalen Suggs (knee) and Jonathan Isaac (knee) are all out, which removes two ball handlers and a key forward. Orlando hopes this four-game West Coast trip can reset its season, but this is a tough opening test.
Golden State has help around Curry. Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, already in the starting lineup, scored 16 against Phoenix, while Brandin Podziemski's 20 and Charles Bassey's 19 show the scoring depth beyond the star. Kristaps Porziņģis remains away from the team, listed as Not With Team, so he shouldn't factor into the rotation. The Warriors have been winning without him. Draymond Green's ejection against Phoenix is a loose end, but the Warriors still won that game.
Expect Orlando to stay competitive for stretches, but its short-handed, turnover-prone offense should struggle to keep up once Curry and the Warriors' depth take over. Golden State wins comfortably, 114-101.
