Pregame AnalysisRing Night at the Garden: Knicks Host a Sixers Team Still Finding Its Shape
The defending champion Knicks open at home against a new-look Philadelphia group with plenty to sort out.

Madison Square Garden will be loud early. The Knicks raise their championship banner and receive their rings at 6:30 PM ET, with the opener against Philadelphia following at 7:00 on NBC and Peacock. Emotion can cut both ways in a season opener, but New York has a major advantage: the title roster is largely intact, so its rhythms and roles are already established.
The central matchup is Jalen Brunson against Tyrese Maxey. Brunson, the Finals MVP, holds an 18-8 record over Maxey, including 8-2 in the postseason. Maxey will have more help than he did last spring, but Philadelphia needs him to break that pattern. If Brunson again controls the pace and the late possessions, the Sixers will have to win this game some other way.
Those other ways are the intrigue. LeBron James makes his Sixers debut alongside Jaylen Brown, Maxey and Joel Embiid, a group with enormous talent and no regular-season games together. Early offense should show how the touches are shared and whether the defense communicates. Availability also matters: Anfernee Simons is questionable with left hamstring tightness and soreness, and he has not yet played for Philadelphia. If he is out, the Sixers lose a layer of depth in a game where chemistry is already a question.
Philadelphia also carries recent history. The Knicks swept them in four games in last season's Eastern Conference semifinals, which should supply motivation. Still, motivation is easier to find than cohesion. I expect the Sixers to stay competitive because of their top-end talent, but New York's continuity, the home crowd and its edge in the Brunson-Maxey matchup should decide a tight opener.
Prediction: Knicks 112, Sixers 106.
