Pregame AnalysisSpurs Carry a Five-Game Streak Into Sacramento to Face a Newly Confident Kings Team
San Antonio's momentum should outweigh Sacramento's long-awaited first win.
This page is the pregame analysis. The box score is the main page for the game, and the matchup history collects every meeting between these teams.
The Kings finally have something to build on. After starting the season winless and, by most accounts, not close in those losses, they beat the Mavericks to become the last NBA team to get a win. That kind of release can change a locker room. Sacramento should arrive at home with more belief and less tension than it has had all season, and the Spurs can't treat this as an easy stop.
Still, San Antonio has the stronger recent evidence. The Spurs are 5-2 and riding a five-game winning streak, the latest a 119-97 win over the Jazz. A 22-point margin suggests they are controlling games rather than just surviving them. Sacramento's first win is a single data point, and the Spurs have shown a longer run of sustained play.
The most interesting question is structural. Kenny Smith has doubted that the starting group of Fox, Castle and Harper can last, saying, "These three guards are really, really good. But they lack size." That puts Castle at small forward, where he faces bigger opponents and takes on more rebounding. Devin Vassell's move to power forward, next to Wembanyama, is part of how the Spurs have made the group work. If the Kings try to attack the glass and test the Spurs' size on the wings, this is where they could find an opening and keep the game close.
I expect Sacramento to play with energy early and make San Antonio work for it. Over four quarters, though, the Spurs' consistency, Wembanyama's presence and Vassell's adaptability should be enough. Their winning habits should hold up against a Kings team that is still learning how to win.
Prediction: Spurs 118, Kings 109.
