Depleted Jazz Frontcourt Faces a Tough Test in Dallas

Utah's thin frontcourt and five-game skid point toward a Mavericks win in Dallas.

This page is the pregame analysis. The box score is the main page for the game, and the matchup history collects every meeting between these teams.

The Jazz arrive in Dallas at 1-6 and on a five-game losing streak, fresh off a blowout loss to San Antonio. Their lone win was a close one over New Orleans. For a team at the bottom of the West, the problem is less about the standings than about what is missing up front.

Utah's frontcourt is badly short-handed. Jaren Jackson Jr. has a torn MCL and is expected to be out until at least December. Jusuf Nurkic is still sidelined with a foot injury, and Mo Bamba is questionable with an ankle sprain. If Bamba can't go, the Jazz will have almost no traditional rim protection or rebounding. Nurkic has progressed to light drills and shooting work, but he will be re-evaluated around the end of this week or early next week, so he shouldn't be counted on here. Blake Hinson (hamstring) is also out, which thins the wings further.

The best way for Utah to stay close is a rebound from Keyonte George, who has struggled over his last two games after a hot start. The Jazz need him to create offense and keep possessions organized when they can't count on second chances or interior defense.

Dallas has its own holes, with Max Christie (hip), Santi Aldama (knee) and Sergio De Larrea (knee) listed out. The Mavericks are coming off a 26-56 season, and the ownership change to the Dumont family adds some background noise. But at home against a team this thin inside, they should be able to attack the paint and control the glass. Utah may hang around if George is sharp, but the Mavericks should pull away in the second half.

Prediction: Mavericks 118, Jazz 106.
