Short-Handed Magic Lean on Wagner and Bane Against Wizards

Orlando's depleted lineup still has enough at home to edge a Washington team with rebounding questions.

The Magic's injury report is the dominant story. Paolo Banchero (high ankle sprain), Jalen Suggs (right knee contusion) and Jonathan Isaac (left knee injury management) are all out. That forces lineup changes and puts more weight on everyone still available. Orlando will have to find offense and organization without its top options, and the early-season margin for error is thin.

Two players give the Magic a path. Franz Wagner is now the primary creator, and he led the team with 26 points and a career-high 11 assists in the NBA Cup win over Toronto. Desmond Bane also broke out of a shooting slump in that game, going 6 of 12 from three after a poor showing in the earlier loss. Orlando bounced back from a 129-99 defeat to win the rematch 121-114 on the road, which suggests this group can respond when its shot-makers are engaged. If Wagner keeps handling the playmaking and Bane keeps spacing the floor, the offense should hold together.

Washington brings its own questions. Rookie No. 1 pick AJ Dybantsa is back from an ankle injury that cost him the first four games, and his return has added energy. But the Wizards' loss to Charlotte exposed a real weakness on the glass, where Moussa Diabate grabbed 17 rebounds, 11 of them offensive. Orlando can take advantage by limiting second chances and making the Wizards play against a set defense.

The Magic are shorthanded, but they have the home floor and the clearer offensive structure. Dybantsa's presence keeps Washington dangerous, yet the rebounding issue should keep the margin tight. I like Orlando to grind it out late. Prediction: Magic 112, Wizards 108.
