The Suns were careful with Miles Bridges on Saturday night, and they still beat San Antonio 102-98. Bridges, the new power forward, rolled his right ankle against the Bulls, and Phoenix held him out rather than test it. He could be back the following Wednesday, which suggests the club sees this as a small problem it would rather not turn into a larger one.

Devin Booker did not play either, but his absence has a simpler explanation. He was resting. Coach Jordan Ott had said he would stagger the lineup through the preseason, and Saturday was Booker's night off. The Suns went in 0-2 and came out of their third preseason game with a win at Mortgage Matchup Center. It was not a comfortable one, and neither star was there to help close it.

Booker's absence has a side effect, since he has not yet found his stroke from deep. He made 1 of 12 from three-point range in the first two games. That matters more now that the front office has traded away Royce O'Neale and Grayson Allen, two players who could shoot from the perimeter. October misses are easy to forgive. Still, the Suns will want to see him make a few once he's back on the floor.

San Antonio's draw was Victor Wembanyama, who flashed some new offensive wrinkles and gave a preseason game some of the interest of a regular-season one. Phoenix's most useful work came inside. Khaman Maluach finished with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, and the Suns were 13 points better than San Antonio with him on the floor. It was a quiet kind of night, but the Suns needed one.
