Timberwolves flatten unbeaten Raptors, 117-94, to go 3-0

Minnesota turned a matchup of undefeated teams into a 23-point rout, taking control early and putting the game away with a 35-15 third quarter.

Two teams came in without a loss, and only one left that way. The Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Toronto Raptors 117-94 at home Sunday night to move to 3-0, while Toronto fell to 2-1 and lost the perfect record it had carried since opening week.

Anthony Edwards led the way with 26 points in 28 minutes, and the offense ran through him and LaMelo Ball. Ball played only 17 minutes but finished with 15 points and eight assists. Edwards took just one rebound and added three assists, a night spent mostly scoring while the game was still being decided. Terrence Shannon Jr. gave the bench 15 points, and Jaden McDaniels and Jonathan Kuminga added 14 and 13. Rudy Gobert had 13 rebounds to go with eight points.

The previews had promised a defensive grind. Toronto came in No. 1 in net rating and Minnesota No. 2, and both sat in the top three in defensive rating. That is not how it played out. The Wolves led 32-21 after one quarter and 55-47 at the half. Then they went 35-15 in the third, stretching the lead to 90-62 and ending any suspense. Toronto outscored them 32-27 in the fourth, which only made the final look a little kinder. Ja'Kobe Walter scored 22, RJ Barrett 20 and Immanuel Quickley 19, but Scottie Barnes went scoreless in 28 minutes and Jakob Poeltl didn't score in 19.

Oddsmakers had Minnesota as a 1.5-point home favorite with a total of 230.5, a number the teams missed by nearly 20 points. Toronto's own 2-0 start now looks softer in hindsight. It came against Chicago and Washington, and Minnesota was the first real test. The Raptors didn't pass it.
