Raptors Pull Away From Wizards 112-102 to Open 2-0

Anthony Davis arrived in Washington with a 34-point debut behind him, but Toronto left the capital with a 112-102 win and a 2-0 start.

Anthony Davis walked into Friday night with the kind of debut people in Washington will remember. He scored 34 points in 34 minutes in the season opener, matching Antawn Jamison for the most by a Wizard in his first game with the club, and the Wizards beat Milwaukee 128-116. The Raptors came to town as the first real test of whether that night was the start of something or a one-off. Toronto's 112-102 win suggests it will take more than one big night from Davis to settle that.

The Wizards also had to work around a thin injury report. AJ Dybantsa, the No. 1 pick, remains out, so his regular-season debut will have to wait. Tristan Vukcevic and Jamir Watkins were also out, and Felix Okpara was listed as questionable. That left Washington leaning even harder on the Davis and Trae Young pairing to run the offense. Toronto's plan for slowing that duo was the central question going in, and it worked well enough to send the Wizards home with their first loss.

The Raptors are 2-0 after a 135-92 rout of Chicago in their opener, a game in which four Toronto players scored at least 20 points. The Bulls' frontcourt was inexperienced, so the Wizards, with Davis in the middle, were always going to be a different kind of night. Toronto still found a way to win by 10 on the road. That kept the early momentum on its side of the ledger.

Washington's hope is that this was a bump and not a trend. Around Davis it has a deep group of young, long prospects turned role players, who are meant to share the work. With Dybantsa and others sidelined, that group will have to carry more of it until the roster is whole. The Wizards are 1-1 now, and the supporting cast will need to give Davis more help than it did Friday.
