Brandon Miller Scores 39 as Hornets Hold Off Wizards 110-103

Miller made 15 of 28 shots and hit the late fadeaway that stopped a 13-3 Washington run, and Charlotte won the rebounding battle 54-41 to move to 3-1.

Brandon Miller scored 39 points on Monday night, and the Charlotte Hornets held off a late Washington push to win 110-103 at home. Miller made 15 of 28 shots, including 5 of 10 threes, and hit the shot that settled it: a turnaround fadeaway with 50.9 seconds left that put Charlotte up 105-100. The Hornets are 3-1. The Wizards fell to 2-2.

Charlotte took control in the second quarter, outscoring Washington 35-23 to lead 54-44 at halftime. A 10-0 run late in the third made it 78-64, the biggest lead of the night, and the Hornets were still up 98-84 with 5:15 left.

Washington then made it close. Anthony Davis hit a three, Kyshawn George scored five straight points, and Tre Johnson made a 30-footer. After Naz Reid lost the ball out of bounds, Trae Young's floater with 1:13 left capped a 13-3 run and cut the lead to 103-100. Miller answered with his fadeaway, and Grayson Allen made four free throws in the final 22.5 seconds.

Charlotte won it on the glass. The Hornets outrebounded Washington 54-41 and had 20 offensive rebounds to the Wizards' 10. Moussa Diabate grabbed 17 rebounds to go with 11 points and three blocks, and Reid had 18 points and 12 rebounds, although he needed 22 shots. Allen scored 15 off the bench and made all seven of his free throws.

Davis led Washington with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Young had 22 points and 10 assists, and George scored 20 on 8-of-14 shooting. The Wizards were still without AJ Dybantsa, the No. 1 pick, who has an ankle injury and has yet to make his NBA debut.

Charlotte won while missing two of its usual starters. Coby White and Kon Knueppel were out again, so Dennis Schroder and Sion James started in the backcourt. Schroder had five assists but made only 4 of 15 shots.
