Magic Star Paolo Banchero Diagnosed With Low-Grade High-Ankle Sprain, Faces Four-to-Six-Week Absence

Orlando's best player hurt his right ankle in Friday's loss to Minnesota. The Magic, 0-2 under new coach Sean Sweeney, now face a month or more without him.

Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero has been diagnosed with a low-grade high-ankle sprain in his right ankle and is expected to be out four to six weeks, ESPN's Shams Charania reported. Banchero was hurt Friday night in the Magic's loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The setback arrives with Orlando at 0-2 under first-year head coach Sean Sweeney.

How the injury happened

Banchero first hurt the ankle in the first quarter, when teammate Desmond Bane fell into him. "It was a play in the first quarter where Desmond (Bane) fell into me, kind of rolled up on my ankle and tweaked it," he told the Orlando Sentinel. He kept playing until the ankle flared up again in the third quarter. He came out, went back in, felt it again and shut himself down: "I'm not going to push it any farther." Orlando lost 115-93, and its 93 points were the fifth-lowest scoring total by a team in the young 2026-27 season.

The diagnosis is a high-ankle sprain, which affects the ligaments above the ankle joint and differs from the more common outward roll. Banchero said as much to Jason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel: "Most of all my ankle sprains have always been to the outside, so this is kind of foreign to me. So, a little scary in that way."

The four-to-six-week window is typical for a low-grade sprain of this kind, and the actual return date will depend on how he responds to treatment. Counting from Saturday, Oct. 24, that range points to roughly Nov. 21 to Dec. 5. That is an estimate based on the reported timeline, not an announced return date.

A fast start interrupted

The timing is especially frustrating because Banchero had started the season strongly. He scored 35 points in the season-opening loss to the Atlanta Hawks, a game that also included a scuffle with Atlanta's Jalen Johnson. Through two games he leads Orlando in scoring at 24.5 points per game and in assists at 7.5, while shooting 69.6 percent from the field.

Those numbers come from a two-game sample, so they say little about what to expect over a full season. They do show how much of the offense ran through him in Sweeney's early games. Orlando has lost both, and the loss to Minnesota was a low-scoring one even before Banchero left the floor for good.

Who fills the gap

The most immediate burden falls on Franz Wagner and Desmond Bane, who will be asked to carry more of the scoring and creation. Wagner is Banchero's longtime co-star, and Bane gives Orlando another high-level perimeter option. Neither has been announced as taking on a specific role beyond the general expectation that their offensive load will grow.

Tristan Da Silva is likely to move into the starting lineup in Banchero's place. The third-year forward has started the season slowly, but he shot 37.4 percent from three-point range on 4.2 attempts per game across 77 appearances last season. That shooting gives Orlando some spacing, though it does not replace Banchero's playmaking at forward.

The larger question is structural. Sweeney's new system has had only two games to take hold, and the team must now learn it without its best player. Early losses and a long absence for a centerpiece make it harder to build rhythm and chemistry while the schedule keeps moving.

A familiar problem

This is the second time in three seasons that Banchero has suffered a significant injury early in the year. He tore an oblique in the fifth game of the 2024-25 season and missed more than two months. The ankle sprain is not expected to sideline him that long, but the pattern is a reminder of how heavily Orlando's outlook depends on his availability.

A four-to-six-week absence at the start of the season is a meaningful chunk of the schedule even if it is shorter than that earlier layoff. Every game missed with an 0-2 record raises the stakes for the games that follow. Whether it damages Orlando's playoff chances will depend on how the team performs without him and how cleanly he returns.

What's next

The Magic were off Saturday. They begin a three-game road trip Sunday against the defending NBA champion New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. It is a demanding first test without Banchero, against a team that has just raised a championship banner.

Orlando will look for answers on offense quickly. Wagner and Bane need to produce, Da Silva needs to find his shooting, and Sweeney must build something workable around a depleted rotation. The team's results over the next month will show how deep the roster really is. Banchero, meanwhile, will focus on recovering from an injury he has never had before.
