NewsNBA Opens 2026-27 Season With a Tripleheader and a New Anti-Tanking Draft Lottery
The NBA's 2026-27 regular season began Tuesday, October 20, 2026, with a three-game NBC/Peacock opening day. The 3-2-1 draft lottery, a three-year trial meant to curb tanking, also takes effect this season.
The NBA's 2026-27 regular season began Tuesday, October 20, 2026, with the league's first nationally broadcast opening-day tripleheader. It starts a campaign in which the NBA is also testing its biggest change to the draft lottery in years. The Board of Governors approved a new 3-2-1 lottery that takes effect this season and applies to the 2027, 2028 and 2029 drafts. It was approved only as a roughly three-year trial.
A three-game opening day
All three openers aired on NBC and Peacock. Boston visited Detroit's Little Caesars Arena at 3 p.m. ET. Philadelphia visited New York's Madison Square Garden at 7 p.m. ET. Oklahoma City visited San Antonio's Frost Bank Center at 9:30 p.m. ET.
The afternoon start was an experiment by the NBA and NBC in the second year of their 11-year, $27 billion media rights partnership, with the goal of turning opening night into an all-day event. Detroit planned a "Blue Carpet" experience and other festivities around the arena and downtown. The matchup pairs two Eastern Conference contenders: Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren and the Pistons against Jayson Tatum, Paul George and the Celtics.
The Garden game was the centerpiece. The Knicks raised their championship banner and received rings, and NBA.com noted it was the franchise's first title celebration in 53 years. They return nearly all of the title team, including Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby. Their opponent was a retooled 76ers team that added LeBron James and Jaylen Brown to a core of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. James is in a record 24th season and with his fourth franchise. The night ended with a Western Conference finals rematch between the Spurs and Thunder.
What the 3-2-1 lottery changes
The Board of Governors overhauled the lottery to combat tanking directly. According to Bleacher Report, the biggest changes are:
- flattened lottery odds;
- an expansion from 14 to 16 lottery teams;
- a drawing for all 16 lottery picks;
- a bar on picking first in consecutive drafts;
- a bar on holding top-five picks in three consecutive drafts;
- "draft relegation" for the three teams with the worst records, who will have worse odds of a top-nine pick than the other non-play-in teams.
Reports in April, before the owners' vote, described the framework in more detail. Under that version, the three worst teams would get two ping-pong balls each, a 5.4% chance at the No. 1 pick. Teams finishing fourth-worst through tenth-worst would get three balls, or 8.1%. Teams losing in the 9-10 play-in games would get two balls, and losers of the 7-8 play-in games one ball (2.7%). Those reports said minor modifications were possible before the vote, so the exact odds should be checked against the league's final rules.
Why it matters
The league's aim is clear from the structure. Under the old system, the three worst teams each held a 14% chance at the top pick, and the April reports followed what they called one of the most tanking-filled regular seasons in recent memory. The new design pushes the other way: finishing last now carries a penalty.
The analysis follows from that. Teams out of the race should have a harder time justifying a lost final stretch, and the incentive to win late games grows. The April reports said the system would also give the East and West eighth seeds at least one chance at the top pick, which raises the stakes of the play-in tournament.
There is a trade-off the league acknowledges. The system could punish franchises that are bad simply because they lack talent, not because they are trying to lose. No one knows how it will play out in practice, which is why the league approved only a trial. The 2029 draft is the last one covered, and the league will reassess after that.
Early tests for the 76ers
Philadelphia's schedule is demanding from the start. In their first 14 games the Sixers play the Knicks, Pistons, Pacers and Cavaliers twice each, according to NBA.com. New York and Cleveland reached last spring's Eastern Conference finals. The league's schedule analysis described an East where playoff berths will be earned rather than given.
The Knicks and Sixers meet again on October 30 in Emirates NBA Cup group play on Prime Video. Their matchups should show quickly how James and Brown fit with Embiid and Maxey.
The NBA Cup moves to Indianapolis
The fourth Emirates NBA Cup also changes. Its semifinals and championship will no longer be played at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Group play begins October 30 and ends November 27. The championship is set for December 11 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Rookies and a late-season date
This year's rookie class will be a draw as well. Washington's AJ Dybantsa and Utah's Darryn Peterson, the top two picks, meet for the first time in the regular season on February 27, after the trade deadline and the All-Star break. By then the first-year players will be roughly two-thirds of the way through their rookie seasons. In a league that has just changed its lottery, that timing also puts the rookies' meeting near the stretch run, when the new rules start to matter.
