NewsWarriors Explore Trade Routes for Kristaps Porziņģis as Center Weighs His Basketball Future
On the day Golden State opened its 2026-27 season against the Lakers, ESPN reported the Warriors are exploring trades for Kristaps Porziņģis, who is dealing with recurring POTS symptoms and contemplating his future in basketball.
The Golden State Warriors have begun exploring trade options for center Kristaps Porziņģis, who is out indefinitely and is seriously contemplating his future in basketball, ESPN's Shams Charania reported Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, citing league sources. The report landed on the day the Warriors opened their 2026-27 regular season against the Los Angeles Lakers at crypto.com Arena, with tip-off set for 10 p.m. Eastern.
Charania reported that Porziņģis is dealing with recurring symptoms of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, or POTS. It is the first public link between his absence and the condition. "I'm told he's at the point now where he is seriously contemplating his basketball future and where that could go," Charania said on The Pat McAfee Show.
What the Warriors have said
The team has confirmed little. On Oct. 14, Golden State announced that Porziņģis would be out indefinitely with a "health-related" matter and gave no further detail. It has not confirmed that his absence is tied to POTS.
In a statement Wednesday, the Warriors said they would not comment on trade speculation or reports about his health and future. They said conversations between the team, Porziņģis and his representatives "will remain private." The statement also said: "We are not anticipating Kristaps being around the team in the immediate future."
Porziņģis remains on the active roster, according to NBC Sports Bay Area. He did not practice or play with the team this preseason, and there is no timetable for his return.
A condition with a history
Porziņģis was first diagnosed with POTS in 2025. It limited him in the 2024-25 Eastern Conference semifinals, when he averaged 15.6 minutes in a six-game series for the Boston Celtics. The one-time All-Star and NBA champion later described the worst of his illness by saying that at one point, "I could just lay on the couch and be a house cat."
His most recent public comments came last week, before Charania's report. "I'm working with doctors and experts to figure out how to be fully back to good health asap," he wrote on social media. "Honestly, I'm getting better and better. I just have to stay patient, and I believe I'll be feeling great again soon." He added that it had been "definitely frustrating dealing with some health stuff that you can't exactly pinpoint, on top of injuries throughout my career."
That optimism contrasts with the picture in Wednesday's report. The two accounts are not necessarily contradictory, since a player can feel improvement while still weighing long-term decisions. But the gap between his public message and the reporting about his outlook is the central uncertainty.
The contract
The financial structure matters. Porziņģis signed a two-year, $40 million extension with Golden State in June. Only $3 million of the $20 million in the second season is guaranteed, which ESPN noted makes the deal essentially an expiring contract.
That could shape both paths the situation might take. The small guarantee limits the long-term money the Warriors would carry if his career ends or stalls. By the same logic, an expiring deal of that kind would be easier for another team to absorb than a fully guaranteed commitment. Whether any team would want to trade for a center with an undefined return date is a separate question, and nothing in the reporting suggests a deal is close. That is analysis, not confirmed fact.
What it means for Golden State
The timing is awkward for the Warriors. A one-time All-Star center was part of the roster they built for this season, and he will not be available at the start of it. The team's own statement frames his absence as lasting beyond a short-term injury.
Golden State's priority appears to be preserving flexibility. Exploring trades while Porziņģis is still on the roster and still communicating with the team suggests the front office is preparing for several outcomes. Those include a return later in the season, a move to another team, or a decision by Porziņģis to step away. The organization has publicly committed to none of them.
The human side is also unresolved. Porziņģis has said he is in "the best hands" and asked for patience. Charania's reporting indicates the decision about his future may now rest as much with him as with the team.
What to watch
The next developments are likely to be a clarification of his medical status and any update on his place on the roster. A formal change to his contract status would also be significant. For now, the confirmed facts are limited. He is out indefinitely, the Warriors are not expecting him around the team soon, and the club has declined to discuss trade talks. Everything beyond that rests on Charania's sourcing and on what Porziņģis decides about his own career.
