Cavaliers Look to Repeat Their Preseason Edge Over Magic in Orlando

Cleveland's fuller, more settled group gets a slight edge in this preseason rematch with Orlando.

This preseason rematch starts from the Cavaliers' 119-105 win in the earlier meeting, and the details of that game point toward Cleveland again. James Harden played and led the team with 20 points. The result gave the Cavaliers an encouraging look at how their new-look lineup can function.

That game also gave Cleveland its first look at full strength. The Cavaliers had their full roster healthy and opened with the projected starting five of Harden, Donovan Mitchell, Peyton Watson, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. Watson was a useful early piece on both ends, forcing multiple turnovers and finding Mobley for a transition alley-oop. If he keeps bringing that kind of activity, the starting group should look even more cohesive this time.

The defense was the clearest separator. In the second quarter, Cleveland forced six turnovers and held Orlando to 27% shooting, which is how the Cavaliers took control. Orlando will need cleaner possessions to avoid a repeat, since a stretch like that can decide a game even in preseason.

The Magic have reasons for optimism. They were not at full strength last time, with Desmond Bane resting, and they still spread minutes through the rotation. Tristan da Silva started and hit 4 of 11 from three, Noah Penda had 8 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists, and Jamal Cain scored 11 off the bench. That depth could keep this one closer. Still, Cleveland's settled starting group and its ability to turn pressure into points should be enough for a narrow road win.

Prediction: Cavaliers 114, Magic 108.
