The Utah Jazz beat the San Antonio Spurs 119-109 on Monday night in Salt Lake City, a ten-point result in a preseason game that came with the usual caveats. It was the third exhibition for both clubs, third of four for Utah and third of five for San Antonio. That is the stretch of the schedule where coaches think more about minutes and legs than about the final score.

The Spurs made the caveats unusually large. Nine players were held out for planned rest, among them Victor Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper and Devin Vassell. What was left was a roster far from the one San Antonio will open with, and the 10-point margin should be read with that in mind.

Utah had its own gaps up front. Jusuf Nurkić has a partial plantar plate tear in his right foot, suffered in the preseason opener against Denver, and will be out at least four weeks. Kyle Filipowski sat with a lower-back issue and has no firm timeline. Between them, the Jazz were thin on big men, which is worth watching as the regular season approaches.

For San Antonio the loss made it 0-3 after Saturday's 102-98 defeat to Phoenix, with the Oct. 20 opener now little more than a week off. The night also took away a small subplot. Ace Bailey was due to face his former Rutgers teammate and fellow draft classmate Harper, but Harper was among those resting, so that comparison will have to wait.
